Writing Placement (for) Juniors (WPJ)

Beginning July 2009, all undergraduate students with 60 units must begin to satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) by choosing one of the two options outlined below.

Option I - taking the Writing Placement for Juniors (WPJ) and following the path noted in the placement chart below

80 3 units pass a Writing Intensive (WI) course
70 4 units pass a Writing Intensive course concurrently with ENGL109X
71 4 units pass a Writing Intensive course concurrently with ENGL109X multilingual section
60 6 units pass a Writing Intensive course after completing ENGL109W with a C or better
50 6 units pass a Writing Intensive course after completing ENGL109M with a C or better
40 10 units pass a Writing Intensive course after receiving CR in LS86, then a C or better in ENGL109M

Option II - passing ENGL 109W (native English speakers) or ENGL 109M (multilingual students) with at least a C- and then completing a writing intensive course with a passing grade

  • If you receive a grade of C- in either ENGL 109W or ENGL 109M, then you must also enroll in ENGL 109X concurrently with the WI course and pass both the WI course and ENGL 109X to complete the GWAR.
  • If you receive a grade of less than C- in either ENGL 109W or ENGL 109M, then you must repeat the course until you have achieved at least a C before taking the WI course.
