Giving Tuesday: Frequently Asked Questions

What is Giving Tuesday and why did it start?

Giving Tuesday is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season, falling on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In the same way retailers and its consumers take part promoting and anticipating exclusive deals when stores open on Black Friday, Giving Tuesday began in 2012 as a push to get communities to come together and encourage charitable activities that support non-profit organizations.

Who can participate on Giving Tuesday?

Everyone! Giving Tuesday is an initiative to start the giving season and everyone is encouraged to be involved. On Giving Tuesday, families and individuals can take part by being generous in ways that matter to them, whether that means volunteering at a local charity or donating to a favorite cause.

How is Sacramento State joining the Giving Tuesday movement?

Sacramento State joins Giving Tuesday as a partner committed to help its University development efforts and spread the word across its networks and beyond. The University wants to engage alumni, students, faculty, staff, donors and friends through social networks, with opportunities to participate in a collective effort to pool charitable giving through online gifts to their favorite college or program on campus.

What does Sacramento State hope to achieve with its first Giving Tuesday?

Sacramento State wants to recruit new donors and engage existing donors by encouraging an additional gift beyond their annual contributions. Because a gift to the University directly impacts the life of a student who is learning to become a future leader, the University wants to raise the profile of giving at Sacramento State.

I already gave to Sacramento State this year, can I participate?

Absolutely. This is an opportunity to provide a little bit extra, that margin that will allow us to go above and beyond. We appreciate your ongoing support and recognition of the value of education through the contributions you continue to make. Giving Tuesday is a way everyone to join in on this day of giving and would be a great year-end addition to your past gifts. We are thankful you can be a part in helping to reach another one of Sacramento State’s goals.

How can I give to Sacramento State after Giving Tuesday has passed?
