Maureen Bauman MSW ’81, MPA ‘87, 2014 Distinguished Service Award
Maureen Bauman didn’t plan to become one of the Northern California’s foremost advocates for de-stigmatizing mental illness. That opportunity came through her role as director of the Placer County Adult System of Care, overseeing mental health services and drug and alcohol services for one of the fastest growing areas in the state.
Mental health professionals are making strides in efforts to increase understanding of the challenging field and Bauman is using her experience, education and persistence to advance the cause. Read more
Chris Higdon ’85 (Business Administration), 2014 Distinguished Service Award
Like father, like son… and brother and wife and brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Chris Higdon’s ties to Sac State are seemingly endless, but it’s his generosity and undying school spirit that made him a recipient of a Distinguished Service Award for 2014.
“Sac State was engrained in me, but it wasn’t like my father or brother or anyone said, ‘You’ve got to go to Sac State,’” Higdon says. “It’s our hometown university and I just had a natural bond. I didn’t really consider going anywhere else.” Read more
James P. Mayer ’92 MPPA, 2014 Distinguished Service Award
By paying attention to every detail, maximizing resources and cultivating strong roots, James Mayer has built a small, but prosperous olive oil company in Yolo County.
He’s applying many of the same principles to his work with California Forward with the goal of improving state government. As the president and CEO of California Forward, Mayer leads a non-partisan group that partners with government agencies, other non-profits and lawmakers to improve state government. Read more
Javed Siddiqui ’70, MA ’73 (Civil Engineering), 2014 Distinguished Service Award
Javed Siddiqui’s work reflects his personality—efficient, hard-working and modest. Though it’s not often in the spotlight, Siddiqui’s craftsmanship can be found throughout Sacramento and all over the Sac State campus.
Since starting JTS Engineering Consultants in 1977, Siddiqui and his employees have worked on hundreds of roads, water lines, sewer lines, drainage systems and parking lots—the infrastructure that many take for granted. Siddiqui takes pride in the quality of his firm’s behind-the-scenes work and the role his alma mater played in his success. Read more
Keri Thomas MPPA ’06, 2014 Distinguished Service Award
The lines between Keri Thomas’ professional career and her volunteer activities are often blurred, and that’s just fine with her.
Cultivating relationships and building bridges is part of her job as director of community and government relations for Sutter Health. Thomas is also an outgoing advocate for the Sacramento region and she’s eager to get involved any way she can. Read more
