The writing proficiency exam (or WPE) is required of every student who seeks to graduate from the California State University. This includes post baccalaureate students. California State University, Sacramento has a detailed website describing the different aspects of this requirement including exam dates. It is important to note that graduate students cannot advance to candidacy, and thus enroll in culminating experience, until the WPE requirement is cleared.

There is a mechanism in place where many graduate students can request a waiver from the WPE requirement. The waiver request is processed through the Office of Graduate Studies.
