PURSUIR OF EXTERNAL FUNDING FOR
UNIVERSITY SPONSORED GRANTS AND CONTRACTS

1. The appropriate fiscal agent for nearly all externally funded activities is the Hornet Foundation. The University Business Office will assume this role only under the most unusual circumstances, based upon the recommendation of the Director of Research and Sponsored Projects.

2. Faculty should contact the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects for assistance when seeking funding sources. When a prospective source has been identified without the assistance of this office, contact should be made promptly and before further exploration.

3. Under no circumstances should negotiation of contract terms be undertaken, even informally, until there has been consultation with the Director of Research or a designee. Ordinarily, such negotiation will be coordinated by a representative of the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects.

4. When the foregoing procedures have been followed and it becomes apparent that a contract cannot be concluded which is subject to established cost recovery charges, the Director of Research may recommend an alternate approach when this is in the best long-term interest of the University.
