SERVICE OF SUBPOENAS/COMPLAINTS

No member is to accept service for any complaints. The persons designated to accept service on behalf of the University is the Legal Counsel in Long Beach. Therefore, all complaints should be directed to that office.

A complaint is a legal document/pleading of the plaintiff alleging wrongdoing by the defendant. Once service of the complaint is accepted, it must be responded to within a specified time, usually 20-30 days after service. It is for this reason that we should direct all complaints to Legal Counsel in Long Beach. Time is very critical. If we accept service, the complaint must be sent to Long Beach and then Legal Counsel sends it to the Attorney General's office. This may not allow the attorney enough time to prepare a proper response.

Staff members may, however, accept service of a subpoena if they are personally served. A subpoena is a legal document used for either summoning witnesses to court or requesting records or other evidence.

DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINTS

All correspondence, written or verbal, regarding discrimination complaints filed with all state and federal agencies is to be through the Equal Opportunity/Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Officer/Advisor to the President.

Anyone from any agency regarding a complaint should be referred to the Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Officer/Advisor to the President.
