About Us

Mission

Sacramento State’s Veterans Success Center (VSC) provides multi-faceted assistance to prospective and enrolled student veterans and dependents.  The VSC aids students in accessing their VA Education benefits, the timely certifying of those benefits, and completing the admission application process.  The VSC also helps students in accessing campus and veteran-related resources, including counseling, and provides leadership opportunities, peer-to-peer mentorship, and support in transitioning into a meaningful career. 

Goals

  • Continually adapt to the needs of veteran students and refine practices as necessary to improve services they need.
  • Provide a welcoming and inviting environment for veterans that will aid in their transition to college.

Support Team

Staff and student leadership are key to the success of the VSC.  The team members are dedicated staff, faculty, and students who contribute in a variety of ways.

Dr. Jeff Weston, Director

Dr. Weston is an Air Force veteran and first generation college graduate completing a BA in Government and a MA in Educational Leadership both from Sacramento State. He earned his doctorate degree from Drexel University.

Maria Johnson, Veterans Career Pathways Program Coordinator

Maria is an Army veteran who has over 6 years’ experience working with veterans and their dependents in post-secondary education. She is an alumna of the Veterans Career Pathways Program (VCPP) and has been coordinating the VCPP since May 2016.   Maria recently obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and wishes to continue postgraduate studies at Sacramento State.

Mario is a Sacramento State alumnus graduating with a Bachelor's degree in History.  Working in Student Affairs since 2009, he is dedicated to helping students achieve their personal and educational goals.

Mateo Avila, Veterans Admissions Counselor

Mateo has been working in student affairs for the last 10 years.  His passion is helping all students obtain their educational goals.  He earned a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley in Legal Studies and a Law Degree from Santa Clara University School of Law.
