Browser Testing
When developing web pages it is customary to test the layout and features in several browsers. At Sac State, we've collected data on visitors to csus.edu to form the recommendations below. The data come from all visitors to www.csus.edu via Google Analytics.
The list of browsers that Sac State websites should support is:
- Internet Explorer 7
- Internet Explorer 6
- Firefox 3
- Firefox 2
- Safari (windows or mac)
| IE 6 | IE 7 | IE 8 | Firefox 2 | Firefox 3 | All Safari | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2009 | 344,996 | 1,432,503 | 16,058 | 203,597 | 575,834 | 225,774 |
| Q2 2009 | 272,860 | 1,300,571 | 128,729 | 152,419 | 625,849 | 234,946 |
| Q3 2009 | 214,271 | 833,372 | 302,958 | 41,979 | 542,047 | 252,201 |
| Q3 % Usage | 9.80 % | 38.10 % | 13.85 % | 1.92% | 24.79 % | 11.53 % |
In analyzing traffic, it is clear that Sac State visitors are different than the world at large. Notably, we should support Safari, which might be typically left off of "global" support lists. Firefox 2 support will likely end at the end of 2009; if its share remains below 5% in Q4 2009, it will be deprecated.
To perform browser testing, open your site in each of the 5 browsers listed above. Ensure that the page displays as expected, including mousing over links or menus. If you use the official Sac State template, this will not be necessary, as the template has already been tested.
