Best Practices

Creating a "fillable form" using Adobe Acrobat? Be aware that Acrobat 8 Professional ships with Adobe LiveCycle Designer, an application used to create advanced PDF forms. The learning curve for this software is quite steep, so we suggest you only use it if you're creating complicated forms. For most forms, use the Acrobat forms tools, available from the Advanced Editing menu in Acrobat. See the workshop handout, Adobe Acrobat: Introduction, for help getting started with basic PDF forms.

Assessments

Can I copy an assessment (a quiz, self-test or survey) into another SacCT course?
Yes. To do this, use the export/import feature in SacCT. To export an assessment, go to your list of assessments (from the Build tab), and click on the ActionLinks menu to the right of the assessment title (small gray box). From the ActionLinks menu, choose Export. Save the resulting ZIP file in your My Files area in your File Manager. To import the assessment [file] into another course, access the course, then go to the Manage Course screen (from the Build tab). Click on Import, then browse in your My Files area for the ZIP file you exported.

Browsers

What can I do if my browser won't play multimedia files or some of the SacCT tools don't seem to work after installing the Microsoft critical update on April 11, 2006?
On April 11, 2006 Microsoft released a critical update in response to patent litigation between Microsoft and Eolas. The update also includes critical security fixes for Internet Explorer. Most users will receive this update automatically via Windows Update. After the update, users will be required to activate applets, ActiveX controls and other embedded objects and plug-ins before they can interact with them. Activation requires hitting the space bar, pressing the enter key, or using the mouse to click on the item. Users running the Firefox or Safari web browsers will not be affected by this update. General issues affecting all products:
  • Embedded content (including video, audio, Flash) cannot be controlled until activated. Each item is framed with a window that prompts the user to "Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate and use this control." After users follow the instructions or click using their mouse; users can use the controls to start, stop or replay embedded content.
  • An item that contains an equation, or was created from the Equation Editor, will launch a text window that prompts the user to "Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate and use this control." The equation will still render on the page.
  • In general, SacCT's testing has uncovered increased instability with the IE browser after this update has been applied. They are escalating this issue with Microsoft.
  • The My Computer applet requires activation before it can be used.
  • The HTML editor applet requires activation before it can be used. The applet is not displayed correctly until the user clicks somewhere in the page outside of the HTML Creator applet.
  • SCORM modules must be activated before they can be used.

How do I remove cookies from my browser (Mac)?
Follow these instructions for deleting the browser cookies on a Mac.

Communications

I am having problems accessing SacCT Chat.
You need to make sure you have the latest version of Java installed on your computer.

What is the difference between the Who's Online tool and the Chat tool?
The Who's Online tool allows students to chat in real-time on a one-to-one basis (private chat). The Chat tool allows students to chat on a one-to-one basis or a one-to-to-many basis (private and public).

The Who's Online tool shows that I'm available to other students, but I'm really not.
You will show as available under the Who's Online tool until you Log out of SacCT. You are not automatically logged off if you just close the browser.

Can I have my SacCT email messages forwarded to an outside email address?
Yes, you can - if your instructor has allowed external email forwarding. To set it up, you'll need to go into SacCT email for a class, then click on the Mail Forwarding icon (top, right-hand side). Enter an outside email address and click the Save button.

Course Content

I get a "navigation to the webpage was canceled" error when displaying content.
If you receive an error in Internet Explorer 8 that states, "navigation to the webpage was canceled", the browser attempted to display content from a non-secure server - a site outside SacCT where you do not need to login. To correct this error, you have two choices: option 1, click 'no' when prompted again to display all content; and option 2, edit your security settings in the browser. Click the following link to see a Navigation Error Flash-based tutorial.

General

Can I use SacCT in all campus labs?
All general university lab computers (http://www.csus.edu/uccs/labs/generalinfo/studlabloc.stm) have been verified for use with SacCT. Departmental lab computers, on the other hand, may or may not have been verified. You may not be able to run SacCT on some departmental lab computers.

I'm getting a message that I need to update the version of Java that is on my computer. But I've already updated it. What can I do?
Java Errors (Windows): After having been through the SacCT Browser Check (and made all the proper adjustments to your system), AND you continue to get messages that you need to update your Java version, you will need to uninstall all previous versions of Java that you have installed on your system. You will not be able to properly upload and attach files to mail or discussion board message in SacCT until you take this step. Follow these instructions for updating your Java in Windows.

Is training provided for SacCT?
Yes. View the training schedule and register for workshops here: http://www.csus.edu/training/

Why can't I log in to SacCT?
  1. You must have a SacLink account.

  2. Type your SacLink login name using lower case, not UPPER case and no spaces, i.e., sac12345 or fl25.

  3. For your password, use your SacLink password, not the last 4 digits of your SSN.

  4. Wait 24 hours if you just created your SacLink account before expecting a login for SacCT.

Can I hide a SacCT course that is displayed on my "My SacCT" page?
Yes. To do so, log into SacCT. From your "My weBCT" page (the page where your courses are listed), click the small pencil icon in the upper-right hand corner, above your list of courses. The Edit Course List page will appear; courses can be hidden or shown from this page.

How do I reorder my list of courses on my "My SacCT" page?
  1. Login to SacCT.
  2. From your My SacCT page, click the pencil icon in the upper right corner of your list of courses.
  3. In the Edit Course List screen, check the box to the left of the name of the course(s) you want to move.
  4. Go to the row where you want to move it and click the move icon to the left of the box in that row.
  5. Choose either Move Selected Above or Move Selected Below from the pop-up menu. Your changes are saved automatically.  Repeat steps 3 through 5 to move additional courses in your list.
  6. Optionally, you may choose to hide or show a course by clicking the Hide Link / Show Link button at the right end of each row.
  7. Click the My SacCT tab at the upper left of the screen, just below the Sac State logo.  This displays your list of courses again in the order you chose above.
How can I remove a SacCT course that I no longer need?
If you are the instructor of record for the course, you can request that it be deleted using the Course Change Request form: http://www.csus.edu/webct/change_form.stm. If you are listed as a student for a course, you must contact the instructor and ask that you be removed.

Can I request "guest" access to my SacCT course?
Yes. To request a guest account, fill out and submit the Guest Account Request form: http://www.csus.edu/webct/guest_form.stm.
