Access SacCT

How do I view my SacCT courses?
  1. You must be registered in the course and have a Saclink account.
  2. Go to the SacCT login page (http://online.csus.edu), click SacCT 6 Login, then login using your saclink username and password.
  3. Once logged in you will see your MySacCT page that displays a list of courses which you are currently enrolled in.
  4. To enter a course click on its name.
Why can't I log in to SacCT?
  1. You must have a SacLink account.
  2. Use your SacLink login name for the 'SacLink Username' using lower case, not UPPER case and no spaces, i.e., sac12345 or fl25.
  3. For the password, use your SacLink password, not the last 4 digits of your SSN.
  4. Wait 24 hours if you just created your SacLink account before expecting a login for SacCT.

I am an Open University student. How do I gain access to SacCT?
  1. Make sure you have a SacLink account. If you do not have a SacLink account, you will need to get a copy of your "Registration Form" (that is signed by your Instructor) or "Verification of Intent to Enroll" form filled out by College of Continuing Education (CCE is located in Napa Hall). You need to bring that form over to the IRT Service Desk in ARC 2005 and fill out a SacLink Database Update Form. It may take up to 24 hours before you can create a SacLink account.
  2. Your instructor will then need to e-mail web-courses@csus.edu with the following information
    • Student's Name and SacLink ID
    • Course Name and Section Number
  3. You will be added to the SacCT course within 24 hours of receipt of that e-mail, Monday-Friday.

What if the course I'm enrolled in is not listed when I log into SacCT?
Check with your instructor. Your course may not be listed for several reasons: 1) Your instructor does not have a SacCT course set up, 2) Your instructor has not yet requested that students be given access to the course in SacCT or 3) You just signed up for the course (it can take up to several days to get access to a course after signing up for it). If you are an Open University student, refer to the SacCT access FAQ for Open University students.

Assessments

How do I take an exam or quiz?
From the Course Tools menu select the Assessments tool. Locate the quiz name from the Assessment window and click its name to open it. In the new window that appears you will see details about the quiz such as date and time availability, duration, and attempts allowed. To start taking the quiz click on the Begin Assessment button (will only display if quiz is currently available). Depending on how your instructor has set up the quiz it can open in a seperate window or within the same SacCT frame. As you answer the quiz questions make sure you click the Save button. To submit quiz, click the Finishbutton.

Can I view my quiz or exam submission?
It depends on whether your instructor has chosen to allow students to access quiz or exam submissions. If your instructor has enabled this option, the View Submission button appears. Click View Submission, to see a list of attempts. Click the attempt to view the specific submission for that quiz or exam.

I received an error message while taking a quiz or exam. Are my answers gone?
If you have been saving your answers while taking the exam, and you encounter an error message, you can open a new browser window and log back into your course. If the time for the quiz/exam has not expired, you should be able to continue your quiz/exam from where you last saved an answer. However, if you did not save any answers to questions you previosly answered, your answers are not available and you have to redo these questions. Therefore, please ensure that as you are taking a quiz/exam you click Save Answer after each question.

Assignments

How do I submit an assignment in SacCT?
To submit an assignemnt in SacCT open the Assignments Tool from the course menu on the left (depending on how your instructor has set up assignments, they may also be available from the course content homepage as a link). Under the Inbox tab you will see listed the name of the assignment(s) due. Simply click on the name of the assignment to open and view instructions on completing your assignment. Type in or attach the required work and click Submit. The completed assignment will now appear under the Submitted tab. Once your instructor has graded the assignment it will appear under the Graded tab for you to review.

Can I edit an assignment I have already submitted?
If your instructor enabled students to take back assignments they have submitted and correct them, you will have access to this option. If this option is available, your assignment will be appear under the Inbox tab even after you have submitted it. However, once your instructor grades your assignment it will no longer be displayed under the Inbox tab and will only be available for review under the Graded tab. The only other way you can edit an already submitted assignment is if your instructor returns it to you with comments and asks you to futher edit it.

Browsers

The SacCT Browser Check is indicating that my Java needs to be updated. How do I do this?
Follow these instructions for updating your Java in Windows.

I can't download files with Internet Explorer.
If you notice a problem opening documents posted in SacCT, it may be due to the security settings in Internet Explorer. See the enable download setting page.

Can I use the browser's navigation buttons instead of the course's navigation buttons?
You should use the navigation buttons within SacCT. The SacCT interface is designed to work with the navigation buttons provided within the course and using the browser's back/forward buttons may cause problems.

How do I remove cookies from my browser (Mac)?
Follow these instructions for deleting the browser cookies on a Mac.

Calendar

How do I add personal entries to the calendar?
Click the date for which you would like to make an entry. Then click Add Entry. Whatever you type in the Title box is what appears on the calendar. Type more details in the Description area if you like. Any calendar entry you make is personal, it is only visible to you. Thus, the only option under Entry Type by default is set to Personal. When you are finished, click Save.

How do I make an entry on the calendar for the whole class to see?
This can only be done if the instructor has set up the calendar so that students may make public entries. If this is the case, public entries can be made in the same way as personal ones, but be sure to select the "public" radio button in the Access area.

Chat

Why are logs kept for some of the chat rooms?
Chat rooms can be logged so that instructors can gauge participation in assigned discussion topics, have a transcript of chat discussion available to students who were not able to join the chat live or it can be used in class to initiate discussion. If your instructor has enabled the log feature in the Chat tool students can access it by clicking on View Log from the drop down menu accessed from the arrow to the right of the chat room name.

Can I send a private message?
Only if the instructor has allowed private messages. To send a private message, first open a chat room by clicking on its name. To send a private message to someone that is logged in, double-click his/her name in the participant list section on the right. A private chat window appears where you can communicate privately.

When using a Macintosh, the Chat room window disappears if I open another course tool or browse another area of SacCT.
This has been an issue while using a Mac and the Chat Room tool in SacCT with either Firefox or Safari. The chat room closes anytime you navigate to another area in SacCT, and to get back into the Chat room you have to reopen it but the previous conversation will not be visible to you. Therefore, one suggestion is to avoid browsing other areas in SacCT while logged into a Chat room. If you have to use other tools while in the Chat room you could have two browsers (Safari and Firefox) open, one for the Chat Room and another to browse the course.

Course Content

Where can I access course material on SacCT?
Typically instructors place course material such as handouts, articles, presentations, and other documents on the course's homepage, in or outside of a folder. To download a document, simply click the icon or link. Depending on how your instructor has set the document to open and the document type, it can open automatically within the SacCT frame or in a seperate window.

Course material can also be placed in a Learning module along with other content such as discussions, assignments, and quizzes. To open an item simply click on its name (which is also a link) from the table of contents.

I cannot view or download some of the files in my SacCT course.
Occasionally, you might not be able to view or download a file from your course. This usually occurs if the link to the file is broken, the file format is not compatible with the application you are trying to open it with, your instructor has not allowed you to access particular content in the course until a specific time period. Contact your instructor if you encounter any of the above while trying to view content.

The Course Tools menu disappeared.
The Course Tools menu has probably collapsed so that only icons for each of the tools is visible. You may notice two small arrows at the right side of this menu, they are used to collapse and expand the menu. When the menu is collapsed they face right, when the menu is expanded they face left. Simply click the arrows to expand the menu and see both the icons and text labels for each tool. The Course Tools menu may also not be available because your instructor has it hidden or changed it to display only icons.

I get a "navigation to the webpage was canceled" error when displaying content.
If you receive an error in Internet Explorer 8 that states, "navigation to the webpage was canceled", the browser attempted to display content from a non-secure server - a site outside SacCT where you do not need to login. To correct this error, you have two choices: option 1, click 'no' when prompted again to display all content; and option 2, edit your security settings in the browser. Click the following link to see a Navigation Error Flash-based tutorial.

Discussions

What is a Discussion Topic?
Topics are separate forums within the Discussions tool that group related messages. Three types of discussion topics are available: Threaded, Blogs and Journals. Threaded topics are the most common, they are used for structured discussions and organize messages into threads that can be expanded and collapsed. Blogs are used for casual discussion where messages are organized seperately and chronologically. Journal topics are usually used for private discussion and self reflection. All Discussion topics can be organized into Categories depending on the content being discussed. They can be public (available to all class members) or private (available to an instructor-selected group of class members). If you have access to a private topic, you will see it listed.

  • Blog Topics - Click the blog topic name to display messages, they will be listed chronologically.

Grades

How do I view Grades in SacCT?
Grades in SacCT are stored in the My Grades tool which you can access from the My Tools menu. When you open the My Grades tool you will see listed the names of the different graded items in your course, which can include quizzes, exams, assignments, discussions and any other content your instructor has recorded as gradable. To the right of the item's name you will see your grade, and if included, statistics and comments.

I handed in an assignment or test a while ago, but I don't see my grade listed. Why not?
Either the instructor has not finished marking the assignments, or he or she has chosen not to release the grades to the students. Check with your instructor if you are unsure.

Will other students be able to see my grades?
No. Only you will be able to view your own grades. However, if someone else knows your login ID and your password, or if you forget to close the browser after you're finished using SacCT on a shared computer, they would be able to log in as you and view your grades. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep your password secure and remember to log off every time you finish using SacCT by closing down the browser.

Why is my Available status incorrect when I use Firefox?
The Available status for you in the Who's Online tool may be incorrect if you updated your version of Firefox for Windows from within the Firefox update program. If you set your status to "Visible/Available" in the My Status area while in the Who's Online tool, and SacCT displays "No" under the Available column, it may be caused by a recent update to Firefox.
