Constitution Week Event
“Finally Equal”, Lecture by John Lewis and Stuart Gaffney, plaintiffs in the CA Supreme Court Case for equal; marriage rights for same sex couples. Stuart Gaffney and John Lewis are two of the plaintiffs in the historic same-sex marriage case, decided by the California Supreme this spring.  That decision held that all California citizens, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens, have the Constitutional freedom and right to marry the person they choose.  Stuart and John, together for 21 years, married on June 17, 2008.

Stuart and John have been leaders in all aspects of the freedom to marry movement in California for over four years.  They will tell their personal and families stories about the importance of the freedom to marry and talk about the important constitutional and public policy issues involved in this civil rights struggle.

John and Stuart are involved in upcoming legislation for Proposition 8, the "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry" initiative on the November 2008 ballot which proposes to amend the California Constitution.

Monday 22               

The Gender Chip Project Film. Although women comprise the majority of undergraduates in America, only 20 percent are earning degrees in engineering and computer science. The film illustrates this challenge as it follows five extraordinary women majoring in the sciences, engineeringand math at Ohio State University.

Mom’s Apple Pie: the Heart of the Lesbian Mothers’ Custody Movement.
Film. While the beginning of the LGBT Civil Rights movement was gaining momentum, the 1970s witnessed horrific custody    battles for lesbian mothers.  This film revisits the early tumultuous years of the lesbian custody movement through the stories of five lesbian others and their four children.
