2018 REVISED REPORTING

Previously, the IRS permitted universities to use Box 2 to report amounts billed for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses (QTREs). New legislation now requires universities to use Box 1 to report payments received for QTREs.

One impact of this change for the 2018 tax year is that the amount reported in Box 1 (payments received in 2018) may be a duplicate of the amount in your 2017 1098-T Box 2 (amounts billed). For example, if you registered for Spring 2018 in December 2017 those QTREs were reported on your 2017 1098-T (Box 2).  If you then paid your fees in 2018, those same QTREs will be also reported on your 2018 1098-T (Box 1).  You may not claim credit for the same QTREs in two different tax years. For tax specific questions or advice on how to prepare your taxes, please contact your personal tax advisor or the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at 1-800-829-1040 for assistance.
