The Department of Art is committed to providing Sacramento State students with the foundation necessary for becoming successful art teachers in the regional public schools and, at the graduate level, in the community college system. Many of the students who have completed the pre-credential program in Art Education have gone on to earn a single-subject teaching credential in Art from the College of Education prior to becoming art teachers in the local schools. Alumni with the MA degree in Studio Art have found part-time and full-time teaching positions in the regional community colleges, while other alumni of our MA program have become high school art teachers instead. Historically, a substantial number of Art instructors in the region’s community college and public school systems have been alumni of our Department, earning the BA or MA (or both) in Art.

The primary mission of the Department of Art continues to be engaging Sacramento State students in the fine arts within a liberal arts context. While offering an academic major for undergraduate students who intend to pursue graduate study and/or careers in the visual arts and allied areas (as well as a minor for students interested in combining art with another field of study), the Department also promotes an appreciation and understanding of the fine arts in the general student population. The General Education courses and the active exhibition and lecture/workshop schedule play an important role in this part of the Department’s mission.
