Art History

"Every day in an Art History class is a journey back through time. It is not just about the past, but also the steps that lead to the present and the future." Christian Baltazar, Art History major

placeholderProgram Overview

The Art History curriculum provides a full range of courses in Western and non-Western art and visual culture from pre-history to the present from many perspectives. Lecture classes, seminars, independent studies, and regional internships, produce college-level knowledge, research skills, global vision, critical thinking, visual literacy, and an understanding of curatorial and art-making practices. After completing foundation courses in world art history and studio practice, students focus on one of four areas of specialization: Early Modern, Asian, Art of the Americas, or Modern and Contemporary art. The art history degree affords a broad general education as well as practical preparation for a wide range of vocations and graduate studies in the field.

What do students say about Sacramento State Art History?

"The various courses offered by the Art History Department helped me become a better writer and researcher. The department is very supportive and challenges you to be the very best you can be." Jessica Litchfield, Art History major

"The Art History program offers great internships and seminars to gain more 'real world' experience. When I took an internship in Collections Management, I had the opportunity to handle actual artworks including a few by Picasso and Warhol, and to learn about the accessioning and cataloging process for an art collection." Stephanie Gin, Art History and Art Studio double major

"The classes offered are very diverse in topic and embrace the idea of expanding Art History from a Eurocentric view into a global one." Katlin Cunningham, Art History major
