Collaborate is a real-time virtual classroom environment designed for Distance Education and Web Conferencing. Collaborate combines different collaboration, presentation and assessment tools which instructors can use to deliver a lecture, for office hours, advising sessions, group work, live discussions, or to create lecture recordings.


Key Features

  • Accessibility – support for screen readers and closed captioning, keyboard access to menus and dialogs, ability to scale most visual content and turn on auditory and visual notifications. More accessibility information can be found in the Collaborate Accessibility Guide (pdf).
  • Applications Sharing - Share files, websites, programs or desktop.
  • Audio - Use computer microphone or headset (VoIP) or telephone (phone number and PIN).
  • Breakout Rooms - Create rooms for group work and collaboration.
  • Chat - Exchange comments and questions, send private messages, track student participation.
  • Mobile Application - Students can join a session from their iOS or Android device.
  • Polling - Select from four polling options, publish responses to whiteboard.
  • Quiz Manager - Deliver timed multiple choice or short answer quizzes in-session.
  • Recording & Built-in Recording Converter - Select from manual or automatic recording options. Convert recordings to MP4 or MP3 formats, and download for offline viewing.
  • Video - Transmit and receive video broadcasts sent from a video camera.
  • Web Tour - Share web resources (i.e. webpage, video - video sharing sites).
  • Whiteboard - Load and present PowerPoint slides, collaborate and brainstorm using writing & drawing tools, share images or capture and share screen-shots.

Accessing Collaborate

Instructors can schedule Collaborate sessions from a Canvas course, making it easy to combine live online sessions or recordings with other course content. Both instructors and students can access Collaborate sessions and recordings by selecting the Collaborate link in the Course Menu or from a Module.

From the Collaborate page in your Canvas course you can:

  • Use the Create Session option to schedule new Collaborate sessions.
  • Select either the Sessions or Recordings tab to switch between a list of scheduled sessions and recordings.
  • Filter sessions list to show available (default), upcoming, expired or all sessions. Note: Available Sessions (active) are identified by a purple Collaborate logo to the left of their name.
  • Join an available session or watch a recording.
  • Convert recordings to a MP4 (Video) or MP3 (Audio) format.
  • Obtain a Guest Link for a session or recording to share with users outside of your course.
