Impaction and Applying to the Business Major

The Chancellor's Office of the California State University has granted the College of Business Administration impaction status for its undergraduate business major. Students applying to the business major are required to submit a supplemental business application.

To apply to the business major...

Students must have completed the following courses with minimum C- grades with the exception of  MATH24 which must be completed with minimum C grade prior to applying:

  • ACCY 1 - Fundamentals of Accounting
  • ACCY 2 - Managerial Accounting
  • ECON 1A - Macroeconomics
  • ECON 1B - Microeconomics
  • MATH 24 - Modern Business Math (Calculus courses ok in lieu of MATH 24.  Pre-calculus and Finite Math do not meet the MATH 24 requirement)
  • MGMT 10 - Introduction to Business Law
  • STAT 1 - Introduction to Statistics
  • MIS 1 - Word Processing*
  • MIS 2 - Spreadsheets*
  • MIS 3 -  Presentation Graphics*
  • Have a qualifying overall grade point average (min. "2.4"); and be in good standing at last college or university attended.  Please note that merely have a 2.4 gpa does not guarantee admission to upper division business program.  Students will be rank ordered by overall gpa.
  • Have 45 units completed.

*Effective for the Fall 2017 semester the MIS requirements have changed slightly.  If a student has completed the prior MIS 1 requirement (Operating Systems and Electronic Communication) we will still accept it for MIS 1.  If you have completed the previous MIS 3 which included both Word Processing and Presentation Graphics you will also have completed MIS 1.

Returning/continuing Sacramento State students must be in good standing at Sacramento State.

New applicants, including transfer students, must have been admitted to the university prior to applying to the upper division major.

Unofficial transcripts of all course work outside of Sacramento State must be submitted to the Undergraduate Business Advising Center.  Transcripts can be submitted in the following manners:

  • Mail
    College of Business Administration
    Undergraduate Business Advising Center
    6000 J Street
    Sacramento, CA  95819-6086
  • E-mail: cba-ugrad@csus.edu
  • Fax: 916-278-4979

If you are changing to pre-business major, or are already in the major and changing concentration you must use the appropriate form found under "Forms & Handouts".

TRANSFER STUDENTS (new students applying to Sac State)

Applying with an Associate's Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Business Administration:

  1. Students earning the ADT must still submit a supplemental application to the major.
  2. Students who are earning an ADT in Business Administration may apply to the upper division business major with work in progress.
  3. Students earning the ADT will earn a 0.1 GPA boost for admission purposes.
  4. The ADT curriculum is used in lieu of the Business major specific courses for admission purposes.  Missing courses must still be completed for graduation purposes.
  5. The ADT in Business Administration does not guarantee admission to the major.
  6. If you are pursuing a ADT in Business Administration, a verification from your community college that the ADT is in progress must be received by the Sacramento State admissions office by their posted deadline.

LOCAL ADMISSION PRIORITY POLICY:

  1. A supplemental application must still be submitted in order to be considered for the major.
  2. Local applicants are not guaranteed admission into the major.
  3. Students who are identified as local area applicants by the university will be awarded a 0.1 GPA boost for admission purposes.
  4. This GPA boost will be in addition to and/or separate from the GPA boost that students earning the ADT would receive. (ADT .1 bump for new transfer student only)

Admission to the Business Major

Students who have submitted a completed supplemental business application will be ranked by their overall Sacramento State GPA (or transfer units GPA for transfer students) and lower division business GPA. The weight of the decision is placed on overall gpa.  Lower division business gpa is used as secondary ranking if necessary.  Admissions will follow the rank-order, beginning from the top and continue until the estimated number of available seats is filled.  The cutoff gpa can fluctuate from semester to semester.
