Sac State Students Dazzle in Portugal

Three Sac State students had the opportunity of a lifetime this summer when they presented their research, conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Katherine McReynolds, at the 29th International Carbohydrate Symposium in Lisbon, Portugal. The meeting held July 14-19th at the University of Lisbon, hosted leading glycoscientists from around the globe and highlighted cutting edge research. The lectures provided new insights and innovative approaches to solve common problems in the field of applied carbohydrate chemistry. Dr. McReynolds’ students, graduate students Cory Vierra and James Cerney, along with Lauren Wells, who received her BS in Biochemistry in May, presented their work on the development of glycodendrimers to prevent new HIV infections in 3 days of poster sessions. There they got to share their research findings with world leaders in the field.Cory Vierra commented, “One of the most memorable experiences I had was discussing my work with a leader in our field of glycodendrimer synthesis and hearing his praise of our strategies. This discussion also provided me with new ideas to use to expand and enhance my project.”
