Short Video Contest

2019 Official Rules

NO FEE OR PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN.  Void where prohibited or restricted by law.  By entering, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules and our decisions, which are final in all matters relating to the Ed.D. Short Video Contest (“Contest”).

CONTEST ENTRY:  All contestants must complete and submit an entry form online no later than January 11, 2019. Failure to complete all required fields, including a link to your online portfolio or website, will disqualify the entry.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:  Only videos submitted in accordance with these rules will be eligible for consideration.

  • Your video must feature one of our Ed.D. faculty and their achievements and address the question: How has their research, teaching and service empowered them to become a Champion of Change? (In other words, how have they used their roles as a teacher, leader and researcher to make a difference in the world?) 

  • Contact information for the alumnus you have been assigned to feature will be supplied by email by February 1, 2019. Contestants unable to make contact with their assigned alumnus should contact the Contest Sponsor.

  • Only one video submission per contestant will be accepted. 

  • Your video must credit the filmmaker(s) by name in the end credits. 

  • Total video length should be no longer than 5 minutes, including credits.

  • All languages are accepted.  Non-English language videos must be subtitled in English. All English and non-English videos must be subtitled. This is easily accomplished by editing the automatic captions in YouTube.

  • You agree you will not submit any content that is libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, sexually, racially, culturally, or ethnically offensive, harassing, intimidating, threatening, hateful, discriminatory or abusive. 

  • Only include content (video, music, photos, illustrations, etc.) in your video that you own, have permission to use, or to which you otherwise have the necessary rights.  Do not include other people in your video unless you have their permission.  Be ready to provide a signed Sacramento State Photography, Visual Image, and Concept Ideas Release Form for all subjects featured in your video.  If you are unable to provide this release form, your entry may be disqualified.


  1. Create a video in H.264 format, exported as an .mov or .mp4 file.
  2. Upload video to YouTube (  
  3. Post a link to your YouTube video on Twitter (use hashtag #EDDvideo and tag @sacstateedd) by May 1, 2019. This is the official means of submitting your entry. It is not necessary to email the Sponsor or physically deliver a copy of your video, unless specifically requested by Sponsor. You may share the message containing the video link and #EDDvideo hashtag across your social media channels, by email and word of mouth however you wish before the Contest Screening & Awards on May 20, 2019.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  11:59 PM (PDT) on May 1, 2019.  All submissions for the Contest must be available via Twitter by the Submission Deadline. We are not responsible for computer, website or other malfunction resulting in late, lost or misdirected submissions.

JUDGING: All eligible submissions will be judged by a panel of judges who will choose the finalist videos based on the following criteria:

  • Production quality
  • Content
  • Creativity

All videos in full compliance with submission guidelines will be screened at the Ed.D. Champions of Change: Short Video Contest Screening, & Awards at Sacramento State on May 20, 2019. All contestants and their guests may attend the event.  

PRIZES:  Prizes will be disbursed to the winning entry (Winner) by negotiable check made out to the name listed as the primary contact on the contest entry form. Entries comprising a team of filmmakers must make their own arrangements to share any prize.

All prize details not specified in these Official Rules will be determined at our sole and absolute discretion. The Winner is responsible for all taxes and any other costs, expenses or fees associated with prize acceptance.

  • The First Place winner receives $1,500
  • The Second Place winner receives $750
  • The Third Place winner receives $500
  • Honorable mention prizes

USE OF ENTRIES: By submitting your video and as consideration for your entry in the Contest, you (or each team member) grant us permission to:

  • Share your video with Sacramento State faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the general public;
  • Distribute your video to Contest organizers and others upon request to allow them to screen your video in connection with their event;
  • Include your video as part of a compilation of entries received to be publicly displayed and distributed, including via the Internet; 
  • Use your video, including excerpts and still shots for our marketing and promotional or other purposes;
  • Use your name, voice, appearance, and/ or information about you contained in your submission for marketing and promotion in connection with the Contest if your submission is one of the finalists.

The permissions above are perpetual, irrevocable, sub-licensable and include the right to copy, distribute, modify, publicly display and perform, translate, and combine your video with other material in any and all media, including digital and electronic media without your review, notice, approval, or compensation.

GOVERNING LAW:  This agreement shall be governed, construed, and enforced in accordance with the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of laws rules.

RELEASE:  You acknowledge and agree that to the best of your knowledge, you are duly authorized to submit your video to the Contest and to grant permissions related to its use and distribution. You acknowledge that you will not receive any compensation for our use of your video, other than prizes awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, in accordance with these Official Rules. To the extent permitted by law, you agree to release, hold harmless and indemnify us as Sponsor, our faculty and staff (“Released Parties”) from and against any claim, cause of action, expense or any liability whatsoever (including reasonable attorney fees and expenses) arising out of your participation in the Contest or your submission, including for infringement and for injuries or damages of any kind including death or injury to person or property.  You agree that any prize you receive is provided as-is without any warranty, representation, or guarantee, express or implied, in fact or in law.
