Order Of The Engineer

The Order of the Engineer is an association for graduate and professional engineers in the United States that emphasizes pride and responsibility in the engineering profession. It was inspired by the success of The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer, a similar and much older Canadian ceremony, and is a common presence in American engineering schools. Before joining, members must take an oath to abide by a code of ethics called The Obligation of an Engineer.

History And Purpose

Students will accept the "Obligation of an Engineer" at a special Engineer's Ring Ceremony. The Ring Ceremony is the public induction of candidates into the Order of the Engineer, during which the engineer candidates formally accept the Obligation of an Engineer and receive a stainless steel ring to be worn on the fifth finger of the working hand as a symbol.

The Obligation is similar to the oath attributed to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.), generally taken by medical graduates that sets forth an ethical code. Variations of the code can be found in the Canon of Ethics of many major engineering societies. Initiates pledge to uphold the standards and dignity of the engineering profession and to serve humanity by making the best use of Earth’s precious wealth.

The Order is not a membership organization; there are never any meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, the Order fosters a unity of purpose and the honoring of one’s lifelong pledge.

Why Attend The Ring Ceremony?

The ring signifies that you have publicly vowed to practice integrity, fairness and respect in all aspects of engineering. The ring shows you will practice the qualities of a professional engineer.
