Sac State named one of the nation’s healthiest universities

Sacramento State has been named one of the nation’s healthiest universities by Active Minds, a nonprofit that works to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses and fight the stigma often associated with mental illness.

The University was among six schools that received the 2016 Healthy Campus Award for demonstrating excellence in making students’ health and well-being a priority. Sac State has a longstanding relationship with Active Minds. This fall, it will host the organization’s National Mental Health on Campus Conference.

Sac State’s chapter of Active Minds offers outreach, awareness campaigns, and interactive workshops to students. And in 2015, the campus hosted Active Minds’ “Send Silence Packing,” a powerful traveling exhibit of 1,100 backpacks (suicide claims the lives of more than 1,100 college students each year) donated by family and friends in memory of their lost loved ones.

In addition, Sac State each spring hosts the Out of the Darkness Campus Walk (pictured), a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“Sacramento State is a model of what’s possible when a college prioritizes a campus culture of health, safety, and well-being,” says Alison Malmon, executive director and founder of Active Minds.
