Amid traffic challenges, Commencement to honor 6,600 grads

Golden 1 Center They’re the happiest days of the year for the Hornet Family: A record total of more than 6,600 students will be eligible to walk across the Golden 1 Center stage this Friday and Saturday during Spring Commencement ceremonies.

Grads, their families, and friends have been advised to leave home extra-early for the ceremonies because of expected parking and traffic issues. The Amgen Tour of California bicycle race and other downtown events will mean street and parking closures at various times over the two days.

The ceremonies for Sac State’s seven academic colleges will include special honors for four individuals whose contributions to Sacramento State, education, and the community are legendary: Alice Huffman, president of the California-Hawaii NAACP; Ruth Rippon, a professor emerita and renowned ceramic artist; and philanthropist Ernest Tschannen will receive honorary doctorates. Professor Emerita Susan McGinty will be awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service.
