Leadership institute fuels college dreams of migrant students

Sharif Jewelers Sacramento State is committed to outreach across the region, aimed at making dreams of higher education come true for everyone. One summertime example is the Migrant Student Leadership Institute (MSLI).

The state-funded MSLI program aims to assist high school students from migrant farmworker families on their path to a college education. More than 80 students participated, receiving academic training and being introduced to financial aid resources, alumni speakers, and lessons on how to become leaders in their local communities.

“Sac State is doing a great job implementing these types of programs because it helps people like us,” says Leonardo Perez, a high school senior who wants to become an entrepreneur. “If it wasn’t for these programs, many of us migrants would be lost.”
