Summer Financial Aid

Year-Round Pell Grants

There is a change to the Federal Pell Grant Programs that allows eligible students to receive additional Federal Pell Grant award for summer beginning with the Summer 2018 session.

To be eligible for the additional summer Pell Grant Award, the student must meet the program requirements and be enrolled in at least 6 units.

In the example below, an undergraduate student who has received 50% their Pell Grant in Fall 2017 and 50% of their Pell Grant in Spring 2018, will have used 100% of their scheduled Pell Grant Award. If the student enrolls in Summer Session 2018, they may qualify for the additional Pell Grant Award if they meet the program eligibility requirements and are enrolled in at least 6 units.

  • How much will 6 units cost in the Summer with a Pell award of $1,480?
If you are eligible for the full summer Pell award of $1,480 towards tuition fees this will leave a remaining balance of $555 owed for summer classes. ($2,041 - $1,480 = $561)
Example based on Summer tuition fees of $285/unit x 6 units = $1,710 plus miscellaneous fees of $331 = $2,041
  • How do I know how much Summer Pell I would be eligible for?
The easiest way to estimate your eligibility for summer Pell will be to first look at your Spring 18 Pell award. If you were enrolled full-time for Spring 18 you would have received 50% of your eligibility. For summer 18 you will be eligible for half of your Spring 18 disbursement if you are enrolled in 6 units.
  • When will my summer Pell disburse?
Your Pell award will not disburse until the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office can confirm all of your enrolled Summer courses have begun.
    • For example, if you enroll in 3 units in Session 1 and 3 units in Session 2, your summer Pell will not pay until the start of Summer Session 2.
  • How do I apply for Summer Pell?
To apply for any summer financial aid assistance you will need to have a FAFSA on file and also complete the Summer Aid Application. The Summer Aid Application will be available in your Student Center in mid-April.
  • How are my summer fees paid?
There are no fee deferments for summer.  Summer fees must be paid for with the student's own funds.
  • What if I change my classes after I submit the summer application?
You must submit a NEW Summer Application with your updated summer courses.  Each new application submitted may take up to three weeks to process.
  • When is the summer financial aid application available?
