Community Partnerships

Sacramento State Literacy Connection

A collaboration of Dr. Robert Pieretti and students in the Applied Communication Sciences Lab (ACSL) in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Sacramento State, the Literacy connection is involved in three ongoing community-based projects:

  • “The Sac State Storytime Connection:” Trains undergraduate students in our program to provide weekly literacy enhancement to low-income children and their families participating in local programs, including Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) programs.  Since fall 2013, 270 students have been trained by ACSL members to participate in the program.  This has resulted in 193 sessions being held at the SFBFS Oak Park and SACA centers using 375 children’s books.
  • Regular parent training in the area of literacy enhancement is provided biannually in both English and Spanish in a series of four classes designed and presented by graduate and undergraduate students in our program in collaboration with the Parent Education Program at Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services and Aspire Public Schools.
  • A website dedicated to literacy enhancement materials for families is maintained and updated regularly:  https://www.csus.edu/hhs/csad/research/literacy-connection.html
