How to Apply to LECS

LECS Prerequisites/Requirements:

  • Open to full time Sacramento State juniors/seniors.  
  • Course recommended: CRJ 1 (May be taken concurrently or substituted; supplemental instruction available)
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must pass the LECS application screening process and meet the minimum requirements for California Peace Officer certification
  • Must pass a background check and get approval from the LECS program and sponsoring agency 
  • Requires at least a three semester committment (1 year of LECS training/workshops plus 1-2 semesters of part time internship and training with a law enforcement agency). See sample first year workshop schedule on LECS Student Resources page. 
  • Note: We are also accepting a LIMITED number of exceptional graduating seniors with only two semesters left who strongly desire and meet the criteria to be a law enforcement cadet.

  • Students who are freshmen and sophomores may participate in the LECS Student Club, and then apply as scholars in the LECS program as juniors/seniors. 

To apply to the LECS program, please submit the following:

  • LECS student application online form (Note: The deadline for priority review for Fall 2019 LECS Cohort 4 applications is April 15, 2019)

  • As part of the online application you will need to respond to the following essay questions (please limit your essay to 400 words maximum each question). It is highly recommended that you type a draft in a word processing program (e.g. Word) and then copy and paste the text into the online form. 
    • Please explain why you would like to participate in the Sacramento State Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars’ (LECS) Program
    • Please explain what you perceive to be the characteristics of a quality law enforcement officer and how you have prepared to succeed in this career. 
    • Please discuss how your life experiences and other activities have helped you gain an understanding of individuals from diverse backgrounds (e.g. race, ethnicity, culture, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, etc.)
  • Make sure to save your application as you are completing it if you need to come back and complete information. (Because the application uses cookies to save a respondent’s progress, it will only work as long as the respondent returns to the survey on the same internet browser on the same computer to finish the survey).
  • Upload an unofficial copy of all college transcripts with the online application
  • Successful applicants will be required to submit an initial background check process (students will be contacted for further information on this process)
