MSW Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

What are the minimum requirements to apply for the CSUS MSW Program?

  • Academic Requirement: Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and have at least a 2.80 GPA in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of coursework.
  • A copy of the Score Report from the Revised General GRE (Graduate Records Examination)
    • The GRE is proctored and reviewed by a private organization separate from CSUS and the Division of Social Work.  Any questions or concerns about exam registration, payment, or examination procedures should be directed to the ETS organization.  Testing information, testing locations, and sample materials can be found at: http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register/centers_dates/.
    • Only the analytical writing portion will be reviewed by the Division of Social Work.
    • GRE Score Reports must be included with the MSW application.
  • Human Biology Requirement: have passed an acceptable course with human Biology content with a grade of "C" or better.  Course content should include: Introduction to the major concepts of biology and their application to humans, reproduction and heredity, energy, and metabolism, ecology, evolution, and the levels of biological organization using the human as an example. Must be completed no later than August 2019.   • Statistics Requirement: have passed an acceptable course in statistics with a grade of ''C'' or better. Course content should include:  Descriptive and inferential statistics, sampling, probability distribution, introduction to research methods, relationship of statistics to research methods. Must be completed no later than August 2019. How do I apply for the CSUS MSW Program?

  1. Apply to the University with the online Cal State Application through the Office of Graduate Studies by TBD
    1. Go to https://www2.calstate.edu/apply to access the University application.  Follow instructions to submit application and pay application fee.
    2. You will have to submit this application before you can access our department's supplemental application. After completing the Cal State Application you will receive an e-mail from the Office of Graduate Studies with instructions for setting up your SacLink account. You will need this to be able to log into our department's application. 
    3. REMEMBER this is one of two applications you will submit.  The Division of Social Work application is separate.
  2. Take the Revised General GRE (Graduate Records Examination) by January 18, 2019
    1. Testing information, testing locations, and sample materials can be found at: http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/register/centers_dates/The GRE is proctored and reviewed by a private organization separate from CSUS and the Division of Social Work.  Any questions or concerns about exam registration, payment, or examination procedures should be directed to the ETS organization.
    2. Only the analytical writing portion will be reviewed by the Division of Social Work.
    3. GRE Score Reports.  **For those applicants who have taken the GRE, but do not have access to scores yet, please write in the date you took the GRE on your application checklist, and send your score report as soon as it becomes available.  You will not be disqualified for not having your score report with your packet as long as you take the GRE by January 18, 2019.**
  3. Complete the Fall 2019 Division of Social Work MSW Application
    1. Application must be submitted by January 18, 2019.  Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
    2. Please read the Instructions for MSW Applicants Fall 2019. 
    3. If your bachelor's degree is NOT from a UC/CSU you will need to complete the Liberal Arts Form.  The Liberal Arts Form is available at the top of the page. Submit your completed form here: https://gradsup.webhost.csus.edu/  
    4. Your three references should utilize the Reference Form available at the top of the page.  References need not submit letters.  Points will not be given for references without a reference form
