Emergency Appointments - 180 Day or Less

CSUEU (Units 2, 5, 7, 9)

Employees can be appointed to work for up to the one hundred eighty (180) days in a year in the same position. The year will be calculated based on the beginning date of the appointment. The one hundred eighty (180) days includes weekends and holidays whether they worked or not. Initial appointments shall be for ninety (90) days with the ability to extend for an additional ninety (90) days if necessary. At the ninety-first (91) day of such an appointment, the employee will be included in the bargaining unit. Appointments of shorter duration may be made.

APC (Unit 4)

Emergency temporary positions shall not exceed one hundred twenty (120) days, and campuses may not make consecutive/recurring emergency temporary appointments for the same vacant emergency temporary position.

SETC (Unit 6)

Emergency Appointments may not exceed one hundred eighty (180) days. Emergency Appointments are not benefit eligible until the first qualifying pay period following ninety (90) days of completed service.

Employees should not begin work until the position, pay level and paperwork has been approved by Human Resources.



To hire on an emergency basis, the Hiring Department needs to provide Human Resources/Employment Services with the following:

  • Temporary Employment Request Form
    • If employees are appointed to a salary above minimum of the salary range, complete the Salary Information portion of the form to provide justification.

 Once the background check is cleared and all paperwork is approved, the hiring department will be notified of the date that the individual is eligible to begin work. The hiring department may then contact the employee. An offer letter of temporary employment will be prepared by Human Resources/Employment Services and e-mailed to the individual being hired.
