What is Religious Studies?

Religious Studies focuses on the beliefs and practices of the world’s religions and their relationship to history and culture. Religious Studies is multi-disciplinary in that it employs the methods and insights of related fields (such as history, sociology, anthropology, and psychology) and contributes to them as well.

Although Religious Studies scholars are empathetic in their understanding of religions, they make no assumptions or judgments about matters that lie outside the scope of academic investigation--for example, about whether God exists or whether one religion has a greater claim on truth than others.

Religious Studies is one of today’s fastest-growing academic disciplines. The number of undergraduates has risen dramatically in the last two decades and has skyrocketed since September 11, 2001.
