Unit 11 - Geologic Time, Paleontology

Review of instructions for completing the Activities (see the syllabus for more details):

Surfing Sites: You must visit all of the surfing sites and write a description of the content of each one. Please note that a web site may consist of many web pages and you should visit enough of these to be able to describe what the entire site is about, not just the home page. Your descriptions should be brief - perhaps a paragraph for each site - but must include 1) a general description of the web site and 2) at least one example of something you learned from the Web site.

Web Exercise: You must 1) describe in detail what you did in the Web Exercise and 2) report to me your results. Be sure to include in your report the answers to any questions which are asked on the web site, copies of any forms which you filled out and any certificates of completion which you receive.

Web Exercise
1. Go to Geologic Time Chart.
Learn the Geologic Time Scale (Here's a web site that might help you to remember all those strange new words: Dr. Bob's Geologic Time Page.)
2. Go to Geologic Time Chart (for testing).
Test yourself to see how well you know the Geologic Time Scale (no peeking at the first chart for answers!). Be sure to include a copy of your completed test chart in your report.

Web Exercise
Go to Dating of Rocks and Minerals.
Follow all of the directions given on the Web site. Submit your certificate of completion.

Go to Interpreting Geologic Sections.
Choose one of the links listed under "Hypothetical Geologic Sections" and follow the instructions to interpret the geologic section. Report how well you did.

Web Exercise
Go to Dinosaur Match.
You may have to click on the grey rectangle to expose the squares and start the game.
Match the dinosaur's name with its description. Continue until all the squares are matched and "disappear." Report the names of the dinosaurs which you correctly matched on your first try.

Complete all 11 pages of the tutorial (by using the "next" links) and report your answers to all the questions which are asked.

Go to Radiocarbon Dating.
Follow all of the directions given on the Web site. Submit your certificate of completion.

Activity #8

Go to How Did the Layers of the Grand Canyon Form?
Complete all 12 pages of the tutorial (by using the "next" links) and report your answers to all the questions which are asked.

Activity #9

Web Exercise
Go to Geology Vocabulary Game.
Select the three boxes under Geology.
Click on "I'm ready! Let's Start" and play the game.
Try at least five words. Report what the answers were.

Activity #10

Go to Geologic Time Quiz.
Answer the quiz questions and report your score: (Please don't "cheat." The point of these quizzes is for you to see how much - or how little - you have learned.)
