Chapter 14 key terms: JIT and Lean Operations

 

Just-in-time (617): A highly coordinated processing system in which goods move

through the system, and services are performed, just as they are needed.

 

Autonomation (626): Automatic detection of defects during production.

 

Jidoka (626): Japanese term for autonomation.

 

Andon (629): System of lights used at each workstation to signal problems or

slowdowns.

 

Activity-based costing (630): Allocation of overhead to specific jobs based on their

percentage of activities

 

Push system (632): Work is pushed to the next station as it is completed.

 

Pull system (632): A workstation pulls output from the preceding station as it is needed.

 

Kanban (633): Card or other device that communicates demand for work or materials

from the preceding station.

 

Preventive maintenance (637): Maintaining equipment in good operating condition and

replacing parts that have a tendency to fail before they actually do fail.

 

Housekeeping (638): Maintaining a workplace that is clean and free of unnecessary

materials.
