GEOGRAPHY
100:
THEMES
IN WORLD GEOGRAPHY
SECTION
1, SPRING 2008
MWF, 10:00 – 10:50 a.m. AMD 309
Prof. Tim Hallinan 3 units
Outline—Themes in World Geography, a course
for Liberal Studies and Social Science majors, introduces geography (“writing
about the Earth”) as a subject of study.
It looks at the interests and skills which geographers bring to and
develop within their chosen discipline.
It begins by evaluating globes and maps as useful representations of the
planet and its features. These and other
tools, as well as an active and critical curiosity, help geographers answer the
characteristic questions, “Where?” and “Why there?” As the semester progresses and with the Five Themes of geography in mind, we’ll
follow our examination of location
with a scrutiny of human-environment
relations (e.g., climate, resources), movement
& change (e.g., population), regions
(e.g., language & religions), and places
(e.g. urban centers).
