GEOGRAPHY 145: FALL 2006 FINAL EXAM Guidelines
|
|
THE FINAL EXAM in Geography 145 is scheduled for Wednesday, December 20th,
3:00 p.m. - 5:00 pm, in our regular classroom, AMD 309. The final is worth
200 points, twenty percent (20%) of the semester total.
POINTS ON THE FINAL EXAM will be distributed by format as follows:
* MULTIPLE CHOICE: sixty (60) multiple choice questions on topics
covered in the assigned PRB bulletins, on the class handouts and
worksheets, and in oral presentations; each of these questions
will be worth 2 points for a total of 120 points;
* MAP IDENTIFICATION: twenty-five (25) characterizations of places
identified on maps of the world, of the U.S.A., and of California:
worth two (2) points each for a total of 50 points; and,
* SHORT ESSAYS: two 150-word essays worth 15 points each.
THE COURSE FINAL is an open-book exam. You may consult Population
Reference Bureau (PRB) bulletins, class handouts, and your own notes
from class. Please bring a pen or pencil to fill out the exam.
THE FINAL EXAM QUESTIONS will approach concepts and data in several
ways. Test questions may focus, for example, on the interpretation
of new data presented in a table or on a map. Or the data itself
may be familiar, previously reviewed in class, but the form and the
focus of your scrutiny will be different. Some items will require
straightforward definitions of key words or phrases. Others will
ask for useful generalizations based on real-world examples. Maps,
graphs, charts, and data tables will all be important parts of the
semester final.
THE APPROXIMATE WEIGHT given to the bulletins and associated topics:
20% POPULATION: TERMS, CONCEPTS, USEFUL GENERAL STATISTICS
based in part on the first PRB bulletin (McFalls, Jr.)
and on class handouts;
25% PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE POPULATION: WORLD, USA, CALIFORNIA
based on the first and second PRB bulletins and on data from
the Census Bureau, California's Demographic Research Unit,
and class worksheets and handouts;
35% MIGRATION PATTERNS - CHANGING AMERICA, CHANGING WORLD
based on the fourth PRB bulletin (Martin & Midgley), on class
Worksheets #2 and #3, on the second in-class reports, on class
handouts and on recent Census Bureau studies and statistics;
20% POPULATION & ENVIRONMENT; DISEASES AND HUMAN HEALTH
based on the 3rd, 5th, and 6th bulletins and on handouts.
