GEOGRAPHY 145: QUIZ #1 Guidelines
|
|
QUIZ #1 will be given on Wednesday, October 11th. The quiz will consist of
* 50 multiple choice questions on concepts & vocabulary (100 points)
* 20 characterizations of locations on US & World maps (40 points)
* a paragraph illustrating insights from presentations (10 points)
BEFORE the quiz review the first two PRB Bulletins
* McFalls, "Population: A Lively Introduction"
* PRB Staff, "Transitions in World Population"
PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION to vocabulary items and graphics in the two bulletins
Review the handout, GEOGRAPHY & POPULATION. Consider the patterns and
examples discussed in class, especially those chosen from the Census Bureau's
International Data Base and from the California Demographic Research Unit's
Reports and Periodicals. And keep in mind the recent in-class
oral reports on countries around the world.
THE QUIZ is "open-book." Because of the sheer volume of material you
may wish to make a summary of useful statistics, definitions, tables,
and class notes. Be sure to review the recently-returned Exercise #1.
BOTH multiple-choice and map characterization items will approach concepts and
vocabulary in a variety of ways:
*some questions will ask for relatively straightforward
definitions (e.g., Which of these best defines a population center?)
*some will ask about relationships among terms
(e.g., If we know the total area of Country A and Country A's
population density, which of the following can we calculate?);
*some will ask for geographical patterns of occurrence
(e.g., In which of these regions of the world are fertility
rates lowest? In which parts of the USA are populations declining?);
*some will ask you to interpret newly supplied data
(e.g., Using this data table, decide which state had the
highest rate of natural increase.)
