Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • Use Folk or Gilbert's sandstone classification system to name a sandstone.

  • Identify and name common clastic sedimentary rocks: shale, mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, conglomerate.

Lab: Sandstone and siliciclastic rock I.D.

Lab and homework:

 

In lab this week we will look at examples of clastic rocks including shale, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate.  We will practice using Folk and Gilbert's sandstone classification systems.
