Degree Requirements: M.S. in Geology

Units required:

This M.S. program will consist of 30 units of study, with at least 9 units of graduate level core coursework, 15 units of electives and 6 units of required thesis research. Course credits will remain active for a period of 7 years, after which time they will no longer count toward the degree. Elective courses will normally consist of 200 level geology offerings, although up to 6 units of approved upper division undergraduate course work may be counted toward the degree.

Core coursework will consist of two required courses and at least one additional approved specialty course chosen from the following list:

Approved specialties courses for the core requirement:

Electives:

15 units of elective coursework are required for the degree, and will be taken from a group of approved graduate level course offerings. These approved electives include extra core courses not applied to the core requirement and the following group of courses:

Geol 299 Special Problems in Geology 1-4 units

Up to 6 units of approved undergraduate coursework may be counted toward the required 15 units of electives. Undergraduate courses used to make up a deficiency will not be counted as electives toward a graduate degree. Undergraduate courses used to meet a core undergraduate requirement for students without a geology degree will not be counted as electives toward the graduate degree.
