This is a TEAM assignment. You may work alone, but this is a good opportunity to get to know a classmate because he or she may prove to be a valuable resource later on in the semester. Both team members will be held responsible for knowing the process and all the information contained in this assignment. Each team member must turn in the assignment handout.

Part 1 - Eureka

Windows 98 Lab instructions

  1. To access the EUREKA, the CSUS Library Catalog System:
    - Click the Start button and the Start menu opens.
    - Point to Programs.
    - Point to Internet Applications.
    - Select Terminal and a QVT/Term window appears.
    - Select Open from the File menu and an Open Session dialog box opens.
    - In the Configuration box, select CSUS_Library_Catalog (EUREKA).
    - Click OK and the Library Gateway Menu should appear shortly.
    - Type E and the EUREKA Library Catalog screen appears.
    - Type S to perform a subject search.
    - At the SUBJECT: prompt, type the word computer and press
    ENTER.
    - Type D to display the entries found.

    a. How many entries were found? __________________________

  2. Now, let's do an author search:
    - Type N to go back to the Eureka Library Catalog screen to perform a new search.
    - Type A to perform an author search.
    - At the AUTHOR: prompt, type King, Stephen and press
    ENTER.

  3. It is also possible to search for material that is located in the Reserve Book Room:
    - Type N to go back to the EUREKA Library Catalog screen and perform a new search.
    - Type R to search the Reserve Book Room.

    - At the COURSE: prompt, type CSC 1 and press
    ENTER.
    - Type 1 to select Csc 1.
    - Type 1 to select Lecureux F.

    Note: At a later date, you may check out any of the CSC 1 exams under Lecureux because most of the CSC001 sections use the same exams.

  4. The CSUS Library has a slide collection so you can search for slides:
    - Type N to return to the display reserve list screen.
    - Type R to return to the EUREKA Libary Catalog screen.

    - Type A to search by artist.
    - At the ARTIST: prompt, type Scott David.

  5. MELVYL is the catalog for all UC Libraries as well as the California State Library located in downtown Sacramento. It is also a catalog of periodical titles owned by UC and other public and private academic libraries in California.
    - Type N for new search and you will return to the CSUS Library Slide Collection Database screen.
    - Type R to return to the Library Gateway Menu.
    - Type M to select MELVYL.
    - At TERMINAL? prompt, type VT100 as the terminal type and press
    ENTER.
    - At the Press RETURN for the MELVYL System -> prompt, press
    ENTER.
    - At the
    -> prompt, press ENTER to see a list of databases.

  6. CARL is an alliance of libraries located in Colorado. UnCover is a periodical database which indexes tables of content of over 16,000 periodicals. UnCover also offers the opportunity to order fax copies of article from this database for a fee.
    - Type exit and press
    ENTER to return to the Library Gateway Menu.
    - Type 3 to access the CARL network.
    - At the Enter Choice > prompt, type PAC and press
    ENTER.
    - At the SELECT LINE#: prompt, type 5 to identify your terminal as VT100 and press
    ENTER.
    - Wait a few moments and the CARL Corporation Network and UnCover screen should appear.
    - Type 1 and press
    ENTER to access UnCover.
    - At the Enter your ACCESS PASSWORD >> prompt, press
    ENTER.
    - At the Press <RETURN> to continue as Open Access user prompt, press
    ENTER.
    - At the to access UnCover without a PROFILE >> prompt, press
    ENTER.
    - At the Press <RETURN> to continue without using a profile prompt, press
    ENTER.
    - At the ENTER COMMAND >> prompt, type W and press
    ENTER to perform a word search.
    - At the
    >> prompt, type Nostradamus and press ENTER.
    - Type 1 and press
    ENTER to view info about the first item.
    - Type D to display the current list.
    - Press
    ENTER to view the charges

Part II - World Wide Web Resources

This part of the assignment covers the World Wide Web. You can use the Web browser of your choice for this part of the assignment. (i.e., Netsape Navigator/Communicator or Internet Explorer.) Before completing this part you may want to obtain a copy of the "Orientation to the Web using Netscape" handout. This handout is located at http://www.csus.edu/indiv/j/josephd/csc001/majors.htm.

Note: The most common way to access a Web site is to type it's Web address (URL) in the Location box and press the ENTER key. This will take you to a specific Web site. When you see a statement like, "Go to www.csus.edu", assume that you will type in the Web address in the Location box and press ENTER.

    This site contains shareware that you can download to your computer.

    As you may recall from a previous lecture, shareware is copyrighted software that includes a license which allows you to use the software for a trial period. If you want to continue to use the software after the trial period, you must send in a registration fee.

    - Click in the Quick Search text box, type Astronomica.
    - Click the Search button.

    CDNow is an online music and video store and it's just one of menay sites where you can access information about music and movies.

    - Click the Find button.

    This is the Infoseek site and it's one of many search engines available on the Web. A search engine allows you to find information on the Web.

    - Scroll down the page. On the right side of the page are a series of categories.
    - Locate and click the Travel link.
    - Under the Vacation Planning section locate Domestic Travel and, click National parks.
    - Click the link for Grand Canyon Official Tourism Page.
