FACS 50 - WebCT -Fall 2000

Web Based and Web Enhanced versions

orientation from 6-8 pm set for January 30 in the Mendocino 2007

Welcome to the WebCT in FACS050 external page. This page has information useful to students in both sections of FACS050 that I will be teaching.

First, a clarification of some terms.

  • Web Based: Refers to a course that has the vast majority of its activity on the internet. This is a kind of distance education course, and will only have one meeting on campus.
  • Web Enhanced: Refers to a classic in-the-classroom type of class in which some of the activity happens on the internet. Most of the class activity will be happening in a classroom on campus. Soon, very few classes on campus will not be web enhanced in some way. Professors would be doing you a disservice if they did not enhance their classes somehow.

I have a section for FACS050 that is prepared in each of these kinds of formats.

Click above for a brief questionnaire to see if you are right for a class that has internet components. The questionnaire is for a web based course, so do not be scared off if you answer "Yes" too many times and are taking the web enhanced class. The web enhanced section is especially designed for the beginner.

For those students in FACS050 Section 2, all the information you will need is in the various subpages to be found in the syllabus webpages. Any additional information you need will be provided later in class.

This is a special message for students registered in the distance learning/web based version of FACS050, section 7, on how to and take the course online (with thanks to Associate Dean McGowan for some of this material)

First, Register and determine if you are right for this class.

  • There are two ways to become a student in this class. If you are a CSUS student you may enroll in Casper. If you are not a CSUS student, but wish to take the course for academic credit, you may take it through the Open University administered by Regional and Continuing Education (RCE).
  • Answer the questionnaire mentioned above to see if you are truly right for this class. The sooner you determine this the better.

Second, do the Registration Assignment (with thanks to Craig Stanley for much of the content here)

A. Don't have a Saclink account? It is vitally important that you do. The best thing to do is to go to the third floor of Sequoia Hall, and get all the Saclink information and sign up for all you need. If you are good at computers, you can actually get this done on your own at any computer lab on campus. Once you have your saclink information/account, you will need a system to use it on such as Netscape or Explorer (I recommend Netscape). The key is that you want a system that will allow you to send attached documents.

B. Send me an E-mail, kawamotw@saclink.csus.edu, (make the subject=FACS 50). Send a small statement about why you are taking this course, the strengths you bring to the virtual class, and if you can make it to the orientation from 6-8 pm set for January 30 in the Mendocino 2007 computer lab as an attachment(no more than 100 words) . If you decide to drop at this point, you could use this opportunity to do the courteous thing and notify me by phone (278-5339) or email. If you do not know how to get this far but still want to take the class, please call me. I am very willing to meet with you to help you along the way.

E. You will receive a confirmation via e-mail. Here's what I will do next:

  • I will contact you via e-mail and give confirmation of your commitment to attend the orientation (or a an alternative plan if you can not make it to the orientation).

F. If you do not get this assignment done, then I will assume that you:

  • have reviewed the expectations of this class, have decided that this class is not for you, and intend to drop (In this case, I can add more people.) or
  • have been away all Summer and had no way of knowing about this assignment ( In this case, there is just a little more work involved for you and me).

Third, get the required readings by ordering them or going down to the bookstore. See the materials page for more information.

Also, the course welcome page is not password protected. It briefly reviews some of the key information of this section and has links to the course syllabus and other useful sites.
