Assignment # 2 - Standards Reflection

Synopsis - Samples - Tips - Tutorials

Synoposis:

Pre-Assessment Using CCTC standards and a word processing program, ask yourself 3 questions for each outcome:

  • What do I already know about this?
  • How did I learn it?
  • What more do I need to learn?

Email as an attachment to instructor. It is ok to not be familiar with many of the standards, just be honest.
Use the template.

Objective: Familiarize yourself with the State Standards.

Samples:

G-2. Each candidate demonstrates competency in the operation and care of computer related hardware (e.g., cleaning input devices, avoiding proximity to magnets, proper startup and shut down sequences, scanning for viruses, and formattingstorage media).

What do I already know about this? I know not to place magnets near a computer or disks because they can cause damage.   I also know the proper way to startup and shut down (start menu), how to scan for viruses (I use Norton) and how to format and store.

How did I learn it? I learned by trial and error (ex. You get an error message if you shut the computer down incorrectly).   I also learned about the importance of having a good virus protection program installed when my former computer contracted a virus.

What more do I need to learn? I don't really know the correct way of cleaning input devices.   I have seen people use "air spraying cans" and occasionally I dust using a dry cloth.

G-3. Each candidate implements basic troubleshooting techniques for computer systems and related peripheral devices (e.g., checking the connections, isolating the problem components, distinguishing between software and hardware problems) before accessing the appropriate avenue of technical support.

What do I already know about this? If I come across a problem, I troubleshoot by first checking connections (ex. Is my modem plugged in?   Did the cat knock a cord loose?).   I then usually run my virus software to check for viruses.   After that, I usually reboot the computer and if I'm working with new software, I might try to reload it.   Sometimes, downloading updates from Windows fixes the problem as well.   If nothing helps, I will first use the troubleshooting tools provided on my PC (ex. Dell Solution Center, Help and Support, etc.).   If I still can't solve the problem, I will call Dell, AOL, Comcast, etc. to get help from an actual live person.

How did I learn it? I learned through trial and error working on my own PC.

What more do I need to learn? I have basic skills that I would like to refine, and I would also like to learn some new and better techniques.

Tips: Remember that your technology based skills can come from previous non school related jobs or activities.  Life skills can play a big part in teaching.
