Introduction
  • The Amazon Rain Forest is in danger of being destroyed!  Many plants, animals, and people depend on this living resource for their survival. You and your group will embark on an adventure to the rain forest.  You will find how useful the Amazon Forest is, discover the factors that are endangering it and find ways that you and your fellow students can help to save it from destruction.  So, pack your bags and bring plenty of misquito repellent, we're going to the Amazon!

Task

  • You and your group are going to do research on the Amazon Forest.  You will write a persuasive paper to convince the class and others to contribute to the cause of saving the Amazon.  The paper will include what resources are taken from the forest for human survival, how the forest is in danger, and what people can do to prevent the forest from disappearing forever.  Your group will also create a poster for your cause.

Process
  • In a group of two people, decide who will be the writer and who will be the illustrator.
  • The group will do research on the Amazon using the web sites provided below.  You will:
    • Find five ways that the Amazon is used for human survival.
    • Find two ways that the Amazon is in danger of destruction.
    • Come up with two things that your group can do to help in the cause of saving the Amazon rain forest.
  • Using the research that your group has found, the writer of the group will write a one page paper to inform the class about how the Amazon is used to survive, how it is in danger, and what we can do to save it.
  • The illustrator will draw a large poster, on poster board 18X12" or larger,  with a slogan to convince people to help save the rain forest.
  • When each group member has completed their task, they will give their project to the other group member for peer editing and evaluation.  This is to be sure that both group members agree on the quality of the work to be turned in.
  • Your report and poster will be presented to the class in order to convince your classmates to help save the Amazon forest.  So make it convincing!

Conclusion
  • Rain forests, such as the Amazon, are being destroyed by about one acre per second.  At this rate, by the time you are out of college, the rain forests will be close to being gone forever.  Use the knowledge that you have gained from this report to help in the fight to save the Amazon.  Below are links to examples of what kids like you have done to help. Every little bit helps to preserve this precious living resource.  What are you going to do to protect your future?
