The Organization of a 7th Grade Research Report

Session 1: In class, hand out assignment, go over general details, show example.

Session 2: In lab, students research starting with preselected websites from teacher.

  • Create a Word document titled Bibliography to save cited sources immediately.
  • Search out each specific question, copy and paste internet research into Word document, take notes, using 'jot notes' . (Author's Comment: This may be slow, but the final product is in the students own words, and they take much more ownership and involvement.)

Session 3-4: In lab, continue the above, reminding students to continue to add to the bibliography.  Open Inspiration template, copy and paste notes from jot notes into the proper location. Here is a sample of a finished brainstorm. The student then changes the bubble brainstorm into an outline in Inspiration.

Session 4-6?: The class then left the lab for a week or so. In the classroom/homework, the students go over notes, and write the report in their own words.

One week later:

Session 7: Back in the lab the students type in the report, triple space to allow room for editing.

Session 8: Continue until the report is completed, triple spaced, print.

Session 9-10?: Peer edit and/or teacher edit.

Session 11: In lab, students make changes to report, insert graphics, turn on text wrap.

Session 12: In lab, continue with final edit, graphics, create title page, finish bibliography using the Citation Machine.
