Introduction

Do you like animals? Have you ever wondered what if would be like to live in a place where it snows in the winter? Get ready to become a private detective and find out all about the animals in the Jan Brett’s story, The Mitten.

Task

We will begin our investigation by reading Jan Brett’s book, The Mitten. Then we will learn all about the animals in the story. We will also learn about winter weather. Finally, we will make and perform our version of The Mitten.

Process

Use the following steps to complete your investigation:

1. Read The Mitten by Jan Brett with your class.

2. Learn about winter weather (the setting) of the story.

Look at magnified snow crystals.

Learn what children do on snowy days

Learn what animals do in the winter.

3. Learn about the animals from the story The Mitten.

4. Choose a job and work with your team to make the play:

· Design the setting.

· Make the costumes. Click here for masks.

· Write the play.

· Be an actor in the play.

5. Put on the play.

· Set designers – put out the props and background.

· Costume designers – show the actors how to wear the costumes.

· Playwrights – teach the actors what to say.

· Actors – put on the costumes, practice, and perform!
