Introduction

Fifth graders HELP!!! Ms. Navarro has lost the first grade teachers manual on animals. Now the first graders will never learn which animals are mammals, insects, birds, reptiles, pets and so much more. What she needs you to do is research the animals and teach these eager to learn first graders ALL ABOUT ANIMALS. Where do they live? What do they eat? Who are their enemies?                             

                                                                      

Task

áYou will:

  •   Work in a group of five
  • Choose an animal category such as; mammals, insects, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
  • Research this animal category answering the following questions as a guidelineÉ
  • Where do they live?
  • What do they eat?
  •  What is unique about them
  • What are examples of the animals in that category?
  • What do they look like? Draw or Find a picture of several animals.
  • Create a poster addressing the category chosen to present to the eager first graders

Process

Before you begin your groups must become experts on the different animal types.

After you are EXPERTS see teacher for assignment of one category

Answer the following questions on a sheet of paper

  • Where do they live?
  •  What do they eat?
  • What is unique about them?
  • What are examples of the animals in that category?
  • What do they look like? Draw or Find a picture of several animals.
  • What else is important to know about your category or animals in it?

Evaluation

Your presentation will be graded by the following criteria:

All questions in the process are represented

There are at least 3 pictures (drawn or from clip art)

The poster is neatly organized

Each person in the group has a verbal part in presenting 

Every person in the group will receive a separate grade and your group members will reflect on each members participation/effort 



 


The presentation will address the following standards:

Plants and animals meet their needs in different ways. As a basis for understanding this concept:

a. Students know different plants and animals inhabit different kinds of environ-ments and have external features that help them thrive in different kinds of places.

b. Students know both plants and animals need water, animals need food, and plants need light.

c. Students know animals eat plants or other animals for food and may also use plants or even other animals for shelter and nesting.

Conclusion 

  After completing this lesson you will have acquired the following:

1. Become experts with the category chosen

2. Learn more about other animals by active listening to others presentations

3. Become important teachers to the eager first graders

4. Be a better student by having experience working with a group

5. Practice presenting information to a group of people.
