Introduction

á   Recently many teams have begun to change their uniforms and official logos in order to make their teams more modern and to give basketball a new look. The Maloof brothers have decided to join this trend and create something totally new for basketball.

á   The very first game played in the NBA was on Nov. 1, 1946 between the Toronto Huskies and the New York Knickerbockers. For the 60th anniversary of the beginning of NBA basketball, the Maloofs have decided to come up with a new basketball court that will revolutionize the sport. These brothers really like math and have decided to incorporate their favorite shapes into the new design of the basketball court. Thee shapes are circles, squares, rectangles, trapezoids, and triangles.

Task

á   The maloof brothers have decided to come up with a team of designers (you) to create a new basketball court. Every basketball player will have to use this new court. Therefore, the Maloofs have recruited five top players to set regulations on the building of the court and overall layout of this new basketball court. These five players will be Predrag Stojakovic, Shaquille OÕNeal, Allen Iverson, Mike Bibby, and Tim Duncan. Your job is to creat a design for the new basketball of the 21st century.

Process

These are the steps that you will need to follow to successfully build your new

basketball court.

1.     Analyze the desires and wants of all of the parties involved: the Maloofs, the NBA players. When analyzing this we will need to examine the players that we have chosen to be on this team, we need to examine their strengths and weaknesses and make some assumptions of what they would like a basketball court to look like. (You will need to find the information about the players on the internet by clicking here or here and use the information to in the chart provided below.)

2.     You will have to draw a rough draft of what your floor plans will look like. You will do this on the blank sheet of white paper that will be provided for you. Your floor plans must include at least one of each of the shapes listed above or else the Maloofs will not support your plan. EVERYONE IN YOUR GROUP MUST AGREE AND PARTICIPATE IN MAKING THE FLOOR PLANS!!!!! You may use the dimensions of a regulation basketball court as a reference by clicking here.

3.     After the rough draft of the floor plan the builders need to know exactly you want this court to be built, they will need to know the dimensions of all of the shapes that you have placed on your court. They will need to know the area of all the shapes in order to build this court correctly. Therefore we need to determine the area and dimensions of all of the shapes that you have placed on your court. You will list these dimensions and the area of the dimensions on the rough draft of your floor plans. In order to find out how to find the dimensions of our various shapes click here.

4.     You are now at the final step, you team will now have to transfer this rough draft onto poster paper which will be provided for you. Your poster needs to look as neat and professional as possible. You will use rulers to draw your lines (in pencil first) and you will need to color it in a way that will be appealing to the board.

5.     Since the NBA will have a new basketball court, a new basketball hoop will also be needed, design this and draw it on the poster paper next to your court.

Conclusion

á   This poster will now be presented in front of the board (the classroom) and they will decide who has the best design. When you are presenting your court you must try your hardest to ÒsellÓ your idea to the board to ensure that they will vote for your design.
