Introduction

A grouchy ladybug, is looking for a fight, and disrespects everyone she meets. In the end she learns good manners and how to respect others.

Would you like to help the grouchy ladybug learn about herself and respecting others? Today you are taking on a new job. You are an Entomologist, who has the exciting job of studying bugs and insects. You have a special task today

It will be your task to discover the meaning of respect and to become a ladybug expert.

 

Task

After reading the book, THE GROUCHY LADYBUG by Eric Carle, work with your partner to discover the following:

 

*       chart the activities of the grouchy ladybug that day

*       draw and describe the main character

*       discover the meaning of respect

*       research facts about ladybugs and make your own

*       discuss personal feelings of respect and then role play

Process

Follow these steps to complete your quest:

1. Read THE GROUCHY LADYBUG with your partner.

2. Make one chart like the one below and write what the grouchy ladybug did each hour of the day.

The grouchy ladybug didn't want to share, so she flew away.

3. Draw and describe the main character from the story.

4. Look up the meaning of "respect" by clicking on the ÒI RESPECT OTHERSÓ icon and then go to the word  ÒrespectÓ above. Click on it to read more about respect.

5. Now you need to research real ladybugs. Click on the life-like ladybug above. Read the page and together, write 3 facts in sentences.

6. You and your partner can make your own friendly and grouchy ladybugs from rocks. You will need 2 round flat small rocks. Paint them red and let them dry. Then use a permanent black marker to draw the dots. Glue 2 eyes on the part you want to be the head.

7. Wow! Your quest is almost over. Talk with your partner about how all the characters in the story were feeling. Act out with your partner what any of the story characters might say to the grouchy ladybug about respecting the feelings of others.
