Planetary Interiors: Background

To understand where we are headed, some terms need to be defined.  Among them are:

• Core: The densest, innermost region of a planet's interior.

• Mantle: The broad zone of intermediate density surroundeing the core.

• Crust: The thin, low-density material on/near the surface of a planet.
