Once the distance to a galaxy is known, it is quite “easy” to derive the luminosity (absolute magnitude) from the apparent magnitude. There are, however, several complications:
- Dust Obscuration Within The Milky Way
- Dust Obscuration Within The Galaxy Itself
(Depends on the type of galaxy we are discussing,
- K correction. Redshifts of galaxies change the
effective wavelength, changing the brightness.
This also depends on the Hubble type.
