Portfolio Assignment-Volcanism Go to the book's web site and chapter 4. Go through the "student study guide quiz". The answer to 18 is A, to 19 E. Go through the "interactive quizzes." Place
your score and the date for both quizzes on a sheet of paper and place it in your portfolio.

Although not required for the portfolio, it would be a good idea to go over the end of chapter questions for all chapters covered before the exam. If you are not
sure of the answer send a message to ListProc and I will answer. Also, go to the end of chapter questions on Journey through Geology regarding the CD-ROM. In
particular, be sure you look at the pillow basalts forming. This does not go in the portfolio.

Volcano Web exercise.

Go to the Volcano World Site:

Go to the Current Volcanic Activity site and click on the latest eruption of Mayon, Philippines in the listing.
Read through the reports going back a year as well as the reports for Feb. 22, 2000 and 16, 2000.
The following should be a page in your portfolio:
1. What volcanic activity caused the evacuation from the volcano area on July 30, 2001 (last year)? (Note that a lahar is a volcanic mudflow.)

2. Reading through the reports for Feb. 22 and Feb. 16, 2000, what similarities do you see between Mayon's behavior and that of Pinatubo before the eruption? (If you missed the video In the Path of a Killer Volcano in class, you should watch it in the media center of the library.)

3. Under the January 6, 2000 listing, hit "click here" to view photos of Mayon. Look at the photos of pyroclastic flows (or nue ardentes). What casualties were there from the 1993 eruption?
