2nd assignment for your portfolio Plate Tectonics II (modified 2/7/03)
For page 4.
After reading chapter 19 (don't worry about material we didn't cover in class),
Go to the book's website Click on "Student
Edition " and then from the pull-down list, select "Chapter 19: Plate
Tectonics." Take the multiple choice quiz and note down on a piece
of paper your score and the date you took it. Take the matching quiz.
For questions 14 onward, use the figure in your textbook to determine the names
of the plates--don't memorize them. Place your score and date you took the quiz
on the same page as the multiple choice results. This will be page 4 of your
portfolio. (Don't worry about missing questions on material we did not cover
in the lectures.)
Go through the animations. Be sure you comprehend what they are trying to show. Note that you must install Macromedia Flash reader onto your computer. You can download it for free. Do not note anything about the animations in your portfolio.
Go to Tectonic Plate Motion. http://cddisa.gsfc.nasa.gov/926/slrtecto.html
The site shows present-day plate motion as measured from space geodesy. The
first figure shows the directions in which the major plates are moving. Scroll
down to the index map of the world. Click on North America. The length of an
arrow is proportional to the rate of movement at each site.
Page 5 of your portfolio will have the answers to the following questions:
1. Explain the striking difference between the arrows at Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada,
Monument Peak and those at Mazatlan, Mojave, Owens Valley, Quincy.
2. Why do the arrows along the east coast of the United States point in a different
direction from those in the Rocky Mountains (e.g., Platteville, Bear Lake) and
Mazatlan?
