A comment from Dr. Rolloff on course projects involving writing....

From all the things that you’ll learn here at CSUS, sharpened writing skills are some of the most readily transferable skills to the job market.  This means that good writers are imminently employable in a wide variety of jobs.  One of the skills employers often ask about when calling me as a reference is “How is her/his writing?”

It’s my belief that writing is more of a learned skill than an instinct, so I challenge you to see all writing assignments as “practice, practice, practice,” particularly when you aren't real excited about what you have to write about.

So if you're frustrated with why professors assign certain projects, you'll be able to avoid some irritation by seeing these more symbolically as an opportunity for writing practice for the real world.
