Positions:    

Responsible for an academic department with up to 13 full time faculty, 12 part time faculty, and 8 graduate teaching associates.  Duties include: course scheduling and staffing; resource allocation; student advising; enforcement of university, college, and department academic policies; curriculum development; faculty development; and external relations.

                     

Innovations:

  • Led MSBA/MIS program to its first national ranking.
  • Established new admissions process for the MSBA/MIS program to ensure the quality of the entering students and to align admissions with program capacity.
  • Initiated new registration controls on MIS courses to ensure enrollments are limited to appropriately prepared and classified students.
  • Created new classification for students admitted to, but not fully prepared for, the MSBA/MIS program.
  • Designed and conducted open forum/advising sessions for graduate and undergraduate MIS students each semester.
  • Formed the MIS Corporate Affiliate Program.
  • Began MIS Department Convocations (for students, faculty, and industry representatives).
  • Decentralized department level resource allocation decisions for faculty support funds (i.e., faculty now have discretion to use designated department funds for student assistants, equipment, books, software, travel, etc).
  • Invested in over $40,000 in classroom infrastructure improvements (computers, projection systems, whiteboards, etc.).
  • Managed change to an annual scheduling process (instead of semester by semester).
  • Developed and managed MIS Department web site.

Growth:

  • The number of MIS majors has increased 92% to over 600 during tenure as Department Chair.
  • Enrollments in MIS courses have increased 24% to over 510 FTES during tenure as Department Chair.
  • Hired three new Assistant Professors during tenure as Department Chair. 

Curricular Changes:

  • Managed 17 course changes during tenure as Department Chair.
  • Managed four program changes during tenure as Department Chair.
  • Managed the introduction of one new course during tenure as Department Chair.
  • Initiated the introduction of an Applied Information Technology Minor during tenure as Department Chair.

  • "Induction Support Systems: Transferring Emerging Machine Learning Technology to the Business Environment"
    This research investigates heuristics to improve the use of inductive machine learning algorithms. Incorporating and evaluating these heuristics in an Induction Support System will foster the development of normative approaches for using inductive machine learning algorithms.

Teaching Experience - Arizona State University (teaching assistant):

 

  • CIS 200 - Computers in Business. Taught DOS, Word Perfect, and Supercalc 4 in lab recitation sections with 30 students. Supervised by Dr. O'Leary.
  • QBA 550 - Decision Analysis. Taught several sessions of this graduate-level decision analysis course, graded homework and developed examination questions. Supervised by Dr. Keefer.
  • QBA 791 - Multiobjective Decision Analysis. Graded homework and performed literature searches for this doctoral seminar in multiobjective decision analysis. Supervised by Dr. Kirkwood.

Research Assistantships -
Arizona State University :

 

  • Developed a library of journal articles from the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Decision Support Systems, and Database Systems. Worked with Dr. Goul.
  • Used inductive machine learning in a knowledge acquisition effort to identify optimization decision models from spreadsheet models. Worked with Dr. Goul and Dr. Roy.
  • Used the Ada programming language for modeling distributed systems. Focused on the "Dining Philosopher" problem. Worked with Dr. Eck.
  • System Administrator for Departmental Xerox 1186 Artificial Intelligence Workstation. Duties included file maintenance, student user training, presentations to faculty, development of users' guide, and general consulting and debugging of Lisp code. Worked with Dr. Goul.
